Some UK universities ask applicants to show their English level, usually when you do not have GCSE English Language at grade 4 (C) or an equivalent qualification. If that applies to you, an online English test such as the Duolingo English Test (DET) can be a convenient way to meet a university's entry requirement.

This guide is for UK home students in England. It explains what the Duolingo English Test is, how it is used for university entry, and why it is a separate question from Student Finance England.

Understanding the Duolingo English Test

The Duolingo English Test is an online English proficiency test that you take at home on a computer. It is accepted by many UK universities as one way to evidence English, and results usually arrive within 48 hours.

Check your chosen course's entry requirements to see whether you need an English test at all, and which tests it accepts.

Register for the test on the Duolingo website and use the free practice resources.

Take the test online with a reliable internet connection.

Receive your results, usually within 48 hours, and send them to the university.

English Tests and Student Finance England

Student Finance England does not ask for an English test. Your funding depends on your residency status, your previous study and whether your course is eligible. An English test is only ever a university entry requirement, set by the university for the course you apply to.

Not sure whether you need an English test? Check the entry requirements for your course, or ask AF Education. Many courses accept GCSE English or an equivalent qualification instead.

Do I need an English test to get Student Finance?

No. Student Finance England does not require an English test. Eligibility depends on residency, previous study and the course. Some universities may ask for an English test as part of their entry requirements.

Is the Duolingo English Test accepted by all UK universities?

Not all, but many UK universities now accept the Duolingo English Test. Always check with the university first.

How does the Duolingo test compare in cost?

The Duolingo English Test is generally more affordable than IELTS or TOEFL.

If a university asks you for evidence of English, the Duolingo English Test can be a quick and affordable option. Your Student Finance England application is separate: check your eligibility first, then focus on meeting your course's entry requirements.
