Frequently Asked Question
Your university or college sets your tuition fee, and the Tuition Fee Loan is paid directly to them. You have to pay it back. For the 2025 to 2026 academic year, full-time students can get up to £9,535 (up to £9,790 for 2026 to 2027). Accelerated degree courses may qualify for up to £11,440 or £11,750 respectively. Foundation year amounts depend on your course subject—up to £5,760 for classroom-based courses, or up to £9,535 for partly practical subjects such as science, engineering, or the creative and performing arts. You can find full details on GOV.UK.
You must provide details of your household income and course start date. The Maintenance Loan is paid directly into your bank account at the start of each term. You have to pay it back. How much you get depends on where you live and your household income—you may not receive the full maximum. You can use the student finance calculator to estimate your Maintenance Loan. Maximum amounts for the 2025 to 2026 academic year:
- Up to £8,877 if living with your parents (up to £9,118 for 2026 to 2027).
- Up to £10,544 if living away from your parents, outside London (up to £10,830 for 2026 to 2027).
- Up to £13,762 if living away from your parents, in London (up to £14,135 for 2026 to 2027).
- Up to £12,076 if you spend a year of a UK course studying abroad (up to £12,403 for 2026 to 2027).
If your course lasts longer than 30 weeks and 3 days, you may also qualify for a Long Course Loan. If you have children or adult dependants, you may be entitled to additional grants on top of the maintenance loan. Full details are on GOV.UK.
The amount you get is not based on your income or your family's. The Master's Loan is paid directly to you and can be used for your course fees and living costs. If your course lasts more than a year, the loan is divided equally across each year and paid in 3 instalments of 33%, 33%, and 34%. You can get up to:
- £13,206 if your course starts on or after 1 August 2026.
- £12,858 if your course started between 1 August 2025 and 31 July 2026.
- £12,471 if your course started between 1 August 2024 and 31 July 2025.

How much you repay depends on your income before tax—not the total amount you owe. You repay a percentage of your income over the threshold for your repayment plan. If your income drops, your repayments drop too.
- Plan 1: £26,900 a year (£2,241 a month) — repay 9% of income over the threshold.
- Plan 2: £29,385 a year (£2,448 a month) — repay 9% of income over the threshold.
- Plan 4: £33,795 a year (£2,816 a month) — repay 9% of income over the threshold.
- Plan 5: £25,000 a year (£2,083 a month) — repay 9% of income over the threshold. Most courses starting on or after 1 August 2023 are on Plan 5.
- Postgraduate Loan: £21,000 a year (£1,750 a month) — repay 6% of income over the threshold.
For example, on Plan 5 with an income of £33,000 a year (£2,750 a month): £2,750 − £2,083 = £667, and 9% of £667 = £60.03 per month.
